Stupa History
It was built at the time when Buddha relics were re-distributed to enshrine them at different locations. Emperor Ashoka opened thousands of relic stupas in which Dharamrajika Stupa of Sarnath is also one of them. As per conclusions, drawn from excavation work carried out at Sarnath site, it is said that originally Dharamrajika stupa was small in size of 13.49 meters in diameter. Later it is enlarged in six different phases by increasing the height, providing stairs from four directions to reach the top etc. During that time, it was fabulous stupa where Buddhist saints registers their presence. Unfortunately in 1794 AD, Jagat Singh pulled down the structure to arrange bricks & stones for his own construction requirements. He was Diwan of King of Baranas (Varanasi) Raja Chet Singh. While happening of this tragic incident, a green relic casket of green marble was re-covered which was kept in a stone-box. Casket was thrown in river ganges where as stone-box is available in Kolkata museum. In later archaeological excavation work, two Gupta period images were recovered in which one is of Colossal Bodhisattva of Kushan period in red stand-stone and second one is image of seated Buddha in Dharam-chakra-pravartana mudra.
