Ramnagar Fort in Varanasi is one of the important tourist attraction. During Varanasi sightseeing, tourists must visit this magnificent historical fort. Ruler of ancient Kashi (today's Varanasi) rules the region from this fort. Descendents of royal family still lives here. The popular term "Kashi Naresh" meaning king of Kashi is used for the ruler from this fort. Fort is located in older part of city and remains special attraction during festival times. Its Ramlila, during Dussehra festival, is special in its own way. Here Ramlila is endorsed by royal family and they came out in public during Dussehra festival.

About Ramnagar Fort
This imperial and beautiful Fort was built by Maharaja Balwant Singh in 17th century; it is located at the opposite bank of the holy Ganges River and is about 14 km from the city Varanasi. Being made in medieval period by Maharaja Balwant Singh, it attracts many tourist and domestic Visitors everyday. Then it was the residence of the royal king of Benaras, who also known as Maharaja of Kashi. Still this fort continues as the residential palace of the royal family members as currently Maharaja Anant Narayan Singh resident here. Fort is located in the coordination at 25.28°N 83.03°E; it has an average elevation of 64 metres (209 feet).

The Ramnagar Fort is built with the creamy chunar red sandstone; the architecture of this fort is match to the Mughal style which they were using to make carved balconies, open courtyards, and picturesque pavilions. There are plenty of things to see inside the temple as it had a temple and a museum within the grounds and the temple is dedicated to Ved Vyasa, a legend, who wrote Mahabharata, the great Indian epic. Legends have it that Ved Vyasa stayed here for a brief period. Being a fascinating location at the Bank of holy Ganges it has become famous spot for shooting, there were many short films and documentaries as well as movies have shot, Chokher Bali is one of the popular movie shot here. There is a public audience hall, popularly known as ‘Durbar Hall’ one can say this is a main attraction in the Ramnagar Fort. Here we can also see temples and museum. A great mix of Indian and Islamic architecture can be seen in the construction of the fort. The fort is built with the red sand-stone, precious marble stones and the glossy marbles give the fort an eye catching appearance.

Inside the fort there is Durga temple, Chhinnamastika temple & Dakshin Mukhi Hanuman temple. Museum that is also inside the fort shows the royal collection of vintage cars, royal palanquins, an armory of swords and old guns, ivory work and antique clock, An especial thing about this clock is that even in that old time it has the special feature to show year, month, week and day even astronomical facts about the sun, moon and constellation of stars. There is also a rare collection of manuscripts, most of them are religious writing, is housed in saraswati bhawan including a precious handwriting manuscript by Goswami Tulsidas. There is also many books from Mughal era which are looks so tough to made and their cover designs are so great.

Ramnagar fort is located in 25.269° Latitude and 83.023° Longitude, on eastern bank of Ganges river. Fort location is about 13kms south-east of main Varanasi city in which Varanasi Junction and other important hotels are located. It is close to Benaras Hindu University and be reached by crossing the river to eastern bank. Fort is in Ramnagar locality of Varanasi city which is at South-East of city and close from Mughalsarai railway station which is often used by tourists for reaching Varanasi.
