Tulsi Das lived through the best days of the Mughal period in Banaras, during his time Akbar built many temples and great places whice tulsi mentioned in his literature. He was dedicated to the city and lived in various places in Kashi. Unlike Kabirdas, Tulsidas was not so disdainful about the city Kashi where he lived. In many of his work he praised lord Shiva and the holy city Kashi in order to provide a nearest destination of liberation or so called Moksha for people on earth. Tulsi das died in 1623 at the age of eighty, and his ashes were consigned to the Ganges.

Tulsi das is said to have lived several at places in Varanasi: at Panchganga Ghat, Hanuman Phatak, and the Gopala temple-all in the heart of the city – and, finally, near Asi Ghat, in a house right next to the river. The ghat is now called Tulsi Ghat, and his house at the head of the ghat still contains a shrine, where the great poet’s sandals are kept. Tulsi ghat is one of the most important ghat in Varanasi, the place got its name in 16th century from the great poet of Hindu mythology Mahakavi (a great poet) Tulsidas, who wrote the great epic ever in the History ‘Ramcharitmanasa’ at Varanasi. According to mythology, when Tulsi's manuscript fell into the River Ganga it did not sink and kept floating instead. It is also believed that the Ramlila (story of Lord Rama's life) was staged here for the first time. At the ghat there is a temple of Lord Ram was built on the Tulsi Ghat. Many of the relics of Tulsi Das are preserved at the Tulsi Ghat. The house in which Tulsidas died has been preserved and his samadhi, wooden clogs, pillow and the idol of Hanuman, which Tulsi worshipped, are all still intact here.

Earlier, this ghat was known as Lolarka Ghat, it was 1941 when Tulsi Ghat made cemented and well designed by the great industrialist, Baldeo Das Birla, it is said that bathing in Lolarka Kund can get you rid of to the leprosy. Tulsi Ghat is also a center of cultural activities. During Hindu lunar month of Kartika (Oct/Nov), Krishna Lila is staged here with great fanfare and devotion.
