About Temple
The present building of Tulsi Manas Temple is erected in the mid twentieth century at southern part of Kashi to honor Tulsi Das. There is exceptional work of marble at all around of temple buildind makes it so white that it is known locally as the vimala temple, the “flawless” one. Next to the new temple of the Banaras Hindu University, this is the largest temple in the city; on its interior walls are marble slabs on which the entire Ramcharitmanas is inscribed. At the back of the temple is a display which delights the villagers who flock to this temple from the rural areas around Banaras. Three-dimensional, brightly attired, animated figures from the Ramayana are shown in the various scenes Hindus know by heart. Rama bends the great bow and wins Sita for his bride. Exiled from his rightful kingdom by a petty family rivalry, Rama leaves the great city of Ayodhya with sita to live in the forest. Sita is kidnapped by the wicked Ravana. The great bird Jatayu, the only witness to the kidnapping, flops his wings in agony and tells what he knows before he dies. And the tail continues, acted out in perpetual motion by those mechanical heroes. As the people watch these scenes, wonderstruck, they repeat to one another the episodes from Tulsi’s epic they all know so well. The memory of tulsi das is vividly preserved in this temple today. He too is cast in plastic and sits in mechanical animation at the temple door, turning the pages of his epic and repeating the name, “Ram Ram”. The four hundredth anniversary of his Ramcharitmanas was celebrated in this temple at the beginning of 1974, when 108 brahmins of Banaeras sat in its spacious hall for days, while they read together the entire sacred book together. His famous version of the Ramayana, called the Ramcharitmanas, was attacked at first by orthodox pandits, but it was loved by the people. Tulsi das was a Bhakt of Rama, the lord whose tale is told in the Ramayana. Hanuman, the monkey servant of lord rama, was also important to tulsi’s devotion. The temple got a real charming look by its own incredible marble design and mesmerizing landscaping around it, there is walls of the temple all engraved with verses and scene from the Ramcharitmanas.
